An acoustic stud wal partition, designed to pass the soundproofing requirements for Part E of Building Regulations. A combination of a MuteClip isolated wall solution, and dense acoustic mineral wool insulation with an acoustic plasterboard surface.

The partition has been designed as a soundproofing solution for new builds or existing structure conversions. The soundproof partition is designed in line with Part E of Building Regulations. The systems and products chosen provide a good level of attenuation in transmissible sound when used together as part of this acoustic partition. These build up’s have been created using knowledge and expertise gained over our 10 years in the business, backed up with acoustic test data in order to ensure compliance with Part E.

The base of most of our soundproof partitions is formed using our tried and tested MuteClip and MuteClip Channel products. These products help to de-couple surfaces and acoustically isolate internal surfaces from structural elements. The clip features a dual impedance silicone isolator, designed to reduce sound and vibration transmission over a wider range of frequencies compared to a single-density isolation clip. Fixed to the MuteClip Channel are two layers of high-density acoustic plasterboard. The mass and sound reduction of these layers can be improved by sandwiching them with a central layer of Tecsound SY70 for a further increase in mass of 7kg/m² and additional vibration-dampening effects. Within the cavity, we recommend filling using 60kg/㎥ acoustic mineral wool. Mineral wool helps to absorb sound and to reduce the ability for the sound to amplify and travel throughout the cavity. The back of the studwork is covered with another double layer of acoustic plasterboard.

Part  E is mentioned a lot in soundproofing and throughout our partitions. Put simply part E refers to the guidelines and requirements for buildings in relation to the transmission of sound. This could be sound transferring between the floors of apartments / flats, or noise travelling between properties in terraces and semi-detached dwellings. All new builds and converted properties must comply to Part E for both airborne and impact sound in order to pass building regulations. Part E is used to ensure people have some degree of peace and quiet in their home with the majority of the population living in close proximity to other households. While these guidelines help in ensuring some level of sound reduction between properties they define the minimum requirements for compliance, not necessarily a good level of reduction in sound transmission. 

A Part E partition is a partition designed using our industry knowledge and soundproofing expertise to provide a simple and effective solution to passing Part E of building regulations for the UK. Combining elements of our single side systems into a full partition soundproofing solution provides a great level of performance while keeping down costs and depth down to a minimum.

All sound is created through vibrations in a medium, this could be through any material, surfaces, walls or through the air itself. The difference between the two ratings refer to the original source of the sound.

– Airborne sound is sound that travels through the air before transferring through a partition, classic examples of this is speech, music, dogs barking, TV sound etc. 

– Impact sound transmits directly through an impact with a partition, this is most commonly caused by footsteps from people or pets.

While types of sound will fall into one of these two categories all sound is simply a form of vibration therefore it’s often the case that both of these values will be affected by a sound source. Sources that cause direct vibration should also be considered and isolated where possible such as a washing machine spinning, speakers etc.

Soundproofing a partition is done through considerations on four main areas, that help to reduce the transmission of sound through partitions such as walls and floors:

Decoupling – Decoupling involves the separation of layers through a medium or method of fixing, by creating a separation between layers through high impedance materials vibrations have a much harder job transferring through to internal or external layers.

Mass – Adding mass to a partition reduces the sound transmission through materials, this relates to mass law, stating that for a total doubling of a partitions mass will reduce sound transmission by approximately 5dB.

Layers – Using multiple layers of different densities help reduce sound transmission. As  the sound wave travels through the different densities the power of the wave is impeded. 

Absorption – Products such as mineral wool absorb sound waves and transfer the kinetic energy to heat energy, reducing the level of sound transfer. Absorpitive materials can also be used within a space to control echo and reverberation.

Resilient channels have been used extensively in soundproofing for many years. While they can perform reasonably well, this relies on them being installed correctly and consistently throughout. Many issues can arise if installed incorrectly, when channels are installed upside down, screws tie surfaces together or the internal layers come into contact with other surfaces at junctions. The MuteClip and Channel can be used as a direct replacement for resilient bar installations and offer a higher performance, more straightforward installation and with much less opportunity for an incorrect installation.

Delivery information.

If you place an order online it’s likely we will call to discuss delivery to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible. Deliveries can arrive on a large vehicle. If there are access issues or HGV restrictions, please do let us know in advance as our website options are given in good faith of no restrictions. All of our deliveries must be signed for so you will need to ensure someone is on the premises on the day of delivery.
