Noise pollution is one of the leading problems in the modern world today. It has a profound and detrimental effect on both your health and wellbeing, it is even more critical now to seek a solution that will give you a tranquil space that you can live in peacefully, and work in without distraction.
Tecsound SY50 is a visco-elastic membrane, and this means it is both a viscous material, part way between a solid and a liquid, having elastic properties, meaning that it returns to its original form when stress is within its limits, like pulling an elastic band, if you pull it too hard it will break. Tecsounds sweet spot for damping or 'muting' vibration does not often go into these 'stresses' in the majority of projects that need control over vibration.
For soundproofing, these are both effective for the damping of vibration, and because of its high mass, will reduce airborne noise too. To achieve the best possible solution on soundproofing projects, you will need to incorporate them into 'Systems', and it is here you will find Tecsound in a range of options. Each offers ways of increasing acoustic performance, for example, by fitting them alongside acoustic cradles to create a fully floating floor, by adding them to joist structures alongside sound insulation for a vast improvement for airborne and impact noise or use in concrete buildings as a standalone for impact reduction.
Tecsound SY50 is a single ply material, one that is used between plasterboards in our acoustic systems or used to be directly applied to metalwork to dampen vibration. Our acoustic test data and performance is based on an acoustic curtain, where Tecsound separates two rooms and then measures its performance. When factored into a 'System' this will change as you cannot add dB levels together, you can learn more on our 'Science of Soundproofing' page.
The subjective nature of noise means your sensitivity to a specific sound or event will differ from others. These noises could be from disruption from footsteps above, or conversation from all directions, or even the loud, tin-like sound from the rain in contact with metal sheeting. Acoustic issues will vary for homes or workplaces, but it is our Tecsound SY50 that offers improvements to our acoustic systems, look for our 'Pro' and 'Plus' systems as these feature the use of Tecsound.

Tecsound SY50 is a 2mm thick, visco-elastic membrane that is accompanied with a self-adhesive backing to make direct application easier without the need for mechanical fixing, tacking or additional adhesives. Visco (viscous, a thick and often sticky consistency) elastic (when stretched will often return to its original state) is a malleable, dense and easy to cut composite that sits between both it’s mechanical properties making it suitable for reducing vibration and airborne noise issues. With both elements combined, they help to dissipate energy, meaning that when sound or vibration comes into contact with it, the sound energy turns into heat - this reduces the sound energy.
Yes, it does, and you will recognise this instantly when you apply it. The self-adhesive backing helps to make sure that the material is in full exposure, and is always in even contact with the surface, this is why we always opt for self-adhesive. Energy from the vibration, especially from metal structures, is absorbed into the Tecsound SY50 and the resonance of sound is dampened, resulting in the removal of a long-delayed ring heard in metal structures. Tecsound is often used between acoustic plasterboard to provide additional sound proofing properties, and the aim is to provide different physical properties, densities and material composites to break down sound in a range of ways, sound moves differently through various mediums.
Tecsound SY50 is highly malleable because of its thickness, which makes it great for metal ducting, we will need some information about the ducting would be good to make sure it is compatible in a specific environment. For example, humid environments could lead to the adhesive becoming compromised over time - we would use Tecsound here to dampen the extended vibrations, and would often not require a complete coverage to alleviate this, In cases where sound escapes the metal ducting we wrap Tecsound around to reduce the sound transmission.
Tecsound SY50’s temperature range is between -20°C to 60°C, anything above and below these could compromise performance with direct contact - it is best to create a form of boxing around these pipes if noise can be heard from them and apply Tecsound to the acoustic plasterboard boxing. You will want to discuss these options with a registered plumbing expert to be sure of its compatibility.
Tec sound SY50 can be applied to waste pipes to help sound proof against the noise of waste transferring through them, this noise issues can be highly uncomfortable, so you should aim to box in the waste pipe if possible.
As an alternative, our MuteWrap™ works exceptionally well also against sound proofing waste flues.
Bathrooms and wet rooms present high amounts of vapour and moisture, which over time can begin to degrade the adhesive qualities and elastic materials in the Tecsound SY50. We recommend that when using Tecsound in an acoustic system, that it has at least a Vapour or Moisture board protecting it from either side, it is most common that Moisture Board is used internally in bathrooms to preserve the sound proofing materials behind it, there should be no direct exposure to damp areas. Vapour Boards concern primarily external walls, so areas where you expect - you may wish to discuss to use of sound proofing materials with a damp specialist.
When hung as an acoustic curtain it measures a 25.2dB reduction - what this means is if a sound measuring device is placed at one end with a sound played at another (usually in a controlled environment and to a specific level of sound) it would reduce it by this amount. You cannot add decibels together, so when using Tecsound SY50 between acoustic plasterboards, applied directly to a wall or within one of our MuteClip® Systems, these results will differ and is not always possible to determine what level of sound proofing the Tecsound will provide in these composites.
