Acoustic Plasterboard is a material you will have come across many times in soundproofing, perhaps you have read it in one of our guides, or a local installer has suggested it as a solution to your neighbour noise, or seen that it features on a specification for a housing or office refurbishment. It is a truly universal product.

Soundproof Plasterboard has a higher mass than standard Plasterboard, and it is this mass that assists in the reduction of airborne sound transferring from room to room by blocking sound energy. To achieve the best possible result in soundproofing, you will need to incorporate Acoustic Plasterboard into our acoustic systems, and you will find these in our 'Systems' tab above in all of our ceiling and wall soundproofing systems across a range of different solutions. Each offers methods of increasing the soundproofing performance by combining them alongside our MuteClip®, or as the front face of our MuteBoard® series, or as an option for the direct install to stud frames where available space is at it's most premium.

How to Soundproof a Wall or Ceiling

A combination of the following will always result in a much improved acoustic performance.


  • Mass: the addition of more substantial materials to reduce sound energy, for example, added layers combined with soundproof Plasterboard.
  • Separation: breaking contact with the surface or surfaces through the use of acoustic isolation clips or stud framing.
  • Damping: the reduction of vibration through the use of flexible, damping materials such as Tecsound.

With the combined properties above, you are creating a soundproofing system that is effective at reducing a more extensive range of sounds, and this works by covering the lower frequencies by separating the mass from the structure and suspending it away. Even with attaching substantial mass directly to the wall or ceiling, it is still attached, and is often lacking an air gap; this is fundamental in the isolation of sound. This, therefore, allows those low-frequency sounds and vibration (not just from machinery but the simple act of walking around, flicking a light switch or closing a door). We recognise the subjective nature of sound and how we react to each one, and that is why we offer so many variances in our systems. We understand that it is not always possible to incorporate significant losses of space with say, the introduction of a stud frame, so we provide different variances to suit what performance you need, your budget and thickness.

  • You will want to make sure that the surface you are applying to is flat to avoid any joints unsuccessfully matching up. 
  • When affixing Acoustic Plasterboard you will want to use heavy duty fixings of 18 per board and remember to leave a 2-5mm gap from the adjacent surfaces.
  • Fix with tapered edge vertically
  • Fill all gaps, including the abutting of all joints and around the perimeter. The aim to make sure the surface is as airtight as possible as you are trying to reduce airflow that airborne noise transfers through, even the smallest of gaps.
  • Use a scrim tape on joins to provide a strong bond for skim plastering; it is essential to note that you require no additional lining paper for skimming, it is ready to go.

Acoustic Plasterboard is best performing when used in a sound proofing system like our MuteClip® options, or when combined with other acoustic materials such as Tecsound or our MuteBoard® options. When space is at an absolute premium and would only allow the thickness of Acoustic Plasterboard, it will offer an improvement over lightweight standard Plasterboard options. If you are fixing over a stud frame, you will want to use acoustic mineral wool between the frame so that you treat the open cavities.

We do not recommend soundproofing your floor with acoustic plasterboard, and this is because it could lead to cracking or breaking of the board, as well as not accommodating any deviation in joist levels.

The blue facing of Acoustic Plasterboard can be skimmed straight on to without any additional lining paper, remember to use scrim tape on all joins to make sure the plastering layer bonds successfully.

The blue paper finish will want to be facing into the room; if using a tapered edge, it will be the tapered edge facing into the room.
