MuteClip Double – Stud Wall Soundproofing

Stud Wall Soundproofing

Take a look at the system’s features and benefits.

MuteClip System

Our MuteClip Systems reduce the most noise in the smallest footprint.

NOISE REDUCTION

Hear the difference.

Play the video to hear the sound difference before and after installing this system. For best results try to match the volume of the unreduced audio to the volume of the noise you’re able to hear.

The noise in the video has been digitally reduced to give you an idea of the sorts of results you could expect. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect science and your personal results could vary due to myriad reasons. However, we have found our customers prefer to hear a decibel reduction rather than read it!

We stand for quality, and we are proud of it.

MuteClip® Double is our slim and effective option for projects that require a wall soundproofing solution that performs at a high standard and is space-conscious with only a 74mm loss of space when fitting to an already existing stud frame or in addition to the new framework without a brick or block construction.

It creates lesser points of contact with the stud frame using our MuteClip®, which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case – acting as a mini shock absorber. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip®, and the new soundproof wall which is composed of a single layer of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspended away from the framework, ultimately resulting in a greatly improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing immediate vibrations.

Soundproofing for stud walls

Soundproofing stud walls can be highly effective. Most existing stud walls are made of lightweight materials and may not even have any insulation to help soundproofing. This might not sound like great news at first but it means that the improvement that can be made can be quite drastic.

For the top level of soundproofing on a stud wall, we recommend the MuteClip Stud Double. This system works by creating a new ‘independent’ frame to attach plasterboard to. To install this frame firstly you screw the MuteClip isolation clip into the existing stud frame. These clever clips have a silicone surround to isolate the new frame and reduce noise vibrations travelling through the old wall into the new frame.

Once your MuteClips are installed you can click the metal channels into them creating a frame that you can attach plasterboard to. In this system, however, we attach a layer of sound-dampening Tecsound sandwiched between two layers of high-density acoustic plasterboard. The finished product is the gold standard of stud wall soundproofing.

Our team are always a phone call away ready to offer advice and support. Our systems can be installed by competent DIYers but if you would like to work with an installer we have relationships with installers up and down the UK that we can put you in touch with.

MuteClip Double Stud Calculator

Use our handy calculator to see what soundproofing products your project will require. Don’t forget to unfold the ‘more info’ tab below to learn how to use this calculator.

Once you have your calculator results you can add all the products to your basket using the button below. You will have to manually input the results from the calculator. We know this is not ideal and we are looking into developing a solution for this.

Wall Isolation Clip Calculator
Wall Stud Center

The wall stud center is the distance between stud uprights. The typical stud upright is 600mm. If you are working directly on a brick wall we recommend using a 600mm spacing here also.

Wall Channel Center

The wall channel center is the distance between the horizontal MuteClip Channels. The typical channel center is 600mm. If you are working directly on a brick wall we recommend using a 600mm spacing here also.

  • If you have multiple adjacent surfaces or partitions to soundproof input them individually. Not as a total m2 input as this will affect the results.
  • If you have windows, fireplaces or other fixed structures we recommend booking a call with us before purchasing.

Questions

A soundproofing system isn’t rocket science but sometimes figuring out which one is right for you can be challenging. Check out our FAQs, get in touch via our live chat, or give us a call to speak to a human.

Where space is a concern, MuteClip® Internal Double can be applied to just one side of a framed partition and will offer a high level of noise reduction, so whether you are improving an existing framework between two rooms or looking to create two rooms from an existing single room, MuteClip® Internal Double would be ideal.

With any existing stud framing, you will want to have this surveyed before applying a substantial mass to it. It may be that its age or thickness is too weak to support these additional weights.

Airborne reduction between rooms with an existing typical internal stud of two layers of standard plasterboard would yield a 10-15dB, a 50-67% improvement as an average across all frequencies. This is given as guidance and does not take into account any potential flanking transmission that can affect the overall performance.

Depending on the thickness of stud framework, this will determine your accoustic mineral wool thickness. MuteClip® and channel offers a 41mm isolation gap between the stud frame and 1st layer of acoustic plasterboard. So in frameworks of 50mm, a 75mm thickness would be sufficient, and a 100mm for the 75mm thickness of the framework. Remember not to double up on acoustic mineral wool and compress it into a gap smaller that it’s total thickness. An air gap of at least 10mm is required to prevent creating a path for sound to travel.

Flanking transmission can cause vibration to travel between tightly joined hard surfaces, which can have a significant impact on any system’s acoustic performance. Always allow a space between the nearby walls, floor, and ceiling, and line it with acoustic sealant as closely as you can without touching.

Competent DIY’ers have installed our systems thousands of times if you have good DIY know-how and read our installation guide carefully you should have no problem.

If DIY isn’t for you we have a network of independent soundproofing installers up and down the country that we can recommend to you.

When referring to Part E Building Regulations for interior rooms in a single dwelling, Part E Building Regulations are likely to be adhered to in this scenario, as long as all flanking paths have been considered and adequately soundproofed. The same goes for the use of stud framework to separate two dwellings with the installation of MuteClip® Internal Double making sure all required components are installed correctly and flanking transmission paths dealt with sufficiently. This system has been tested as a framework in settings that showcase its performance going beyond the acoustic requirements set out in the Approved Document Part E.
