Concrete offers greater control with pre-cast options, these are factory-built slabs and can be built with a greater speed than timber. Concrete also allows taller structures to be built with less square meterage on the ground. But although these are made of concrete, they still require soundproofing on ceilings to protect one another from impact and airborne noise. We now find multi-purpose complexes that give us restaurants, gymnasiums and bars right underneath residential builds. These prompt both Part E Building Regulations and in some cases, very strict Building Control requirements.

Concrete offers 'stiffness' and 'mass' which offer both negative and positives at the same time. the 'stiffness' here makes it a problem for impact noise when there is no decoupling or separation from the structure. Our MuteClip® offers an effective method of decoupling with a strong focus on minimising the space lost, helping to protect against impact noise. The 'mass' here helps to protect against airborne noise, the benefit of concrete. But, if the noise is of low frequency in nature or not quite enough for the property we then again seek isolation through decoupling. If you are working on new build structures as an architect, acoustic consultant or a specifier, we are able to provide 'Partition Designs' that combine ceiling and floor (when necessary) systems to showcase potential acoustic performance values. We are able to look at the projected airborne and impact down to the different structural concrete slabs alongside the inclusion of our differing ceiling soundproofing systems to find the right one for your project. We are also able to do this with existing builds when we have the previous structure design with the relevant information.
Acoustic Design requires a blend of the creative, scientific and practical approaches to solving the huge majority of issues found in soundproofing. An understanding of everything from neighbour noise to workplace disturbances with how it affects every individual differently cannot be responded by simply adhering to regulations, they must be acknowledged together, whether that is with you, an individual or the workplace as a whole.
Flanking transmission or flanking noise is where sound takes an alternative path, which varies from room to room, and structure to structure. When open cavities great or small or adjacent to the area you are covering, for example, any wall partitions that are adjacent to the ceiling will become the next area of weakness. We can help advise on this and the answer can range from installing Acoustic Mineral Wool between the studs to using varying wall and ceiling soundproofing systems to get it under control.
