MuteClip® (Patent Pending) Stud Single is perfect for projects that require an effective solution for ceiling soundproofing in concrete builds, one that increases acoustic performance for both airborne and impact noise. Its performance comes from a combination of both the separated stud framework that creates lesser points of contact with concrete soffit ceiling and using our MuteClip® which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber, and this is attached to the new frame. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip® and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of a single layer of Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspend away from the concrete slab. What this results in is an improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reduction of impact noise and other forms of vibration, which are often problematic in concrete constructions.
This systems performance can be further increased to achieve additional reductions in sound and vibration transmission, please ask a member of staff about these options if you require additional system performance.

Installation is based on a standard 400mm joist spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip® at 400mm in a grid configuration with a MuteClip at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

Where concrete structures are best performing in terms of sound insulation is the airborne noise, its mass is usually sufficient in reducing a wide range of noise issues to a non-intrusive level, but not always. Impact noise is problematic in concrete constructions and requires separation to see high levels of acoustic performance, separation is also necessary to when low-frequency airborne noise is present. MuteClip® Concrete Stud Single is fitted to a new stud frame in the majority of cases, one that is isolated from the concrete substrate above to break the contact of MuteClip® and Channels. Without taking flanking noise issues into account, something that can be in abundance in adjacent walls through direct contact, we would expect a 5-10dB improvement for airborne and 8-10dB for impact noise, 25-50% and 40-50% respectively reduction as a guide to common household noise issues. Excessive noise issues where music, cinema rooms and other such noises would require a more robust ceiling soundproofing system installing.
Yes it will, the separation provided by the separated stud frame helps to break contact for vibration to transfer, and the MuteClip® and Channel are creating a further suspension for any sound issues still reaching past the framework. Impact noise issues are reduced significantly; these are the sounds of footsteps, dropping of objects and also the dragging of furniture. The single layer could work as a functional trial if you decide that space needs to be lost for a further reduction by upgrading to our MuteClip® Concrete Stud Double to tackle noise issues that revolve around intrusive noises from televisions and audio focused activities from stereo systems etc.
With new build concrete structures, it is more often than not that the mass per cubic meter is significant enough to meet airborne noise requirements, and often requires only impact noise insulation. There are occasions where regulations have not been met to where MuteClip® Stud Single would likely suffice, but building control would need to consider fire regulations and this system’s suitability. In conversion projects, the same applies concerning fire regulations, but a mass of concrete may not be up to current building regulations and will require perhaps something more robust - we would advise to carry out an acoustic test of both airborne and impact in existing structures to survey what would be appropriate. Adequate soundproofing would need to be applied to adjacent surfaces to prevent Flanking Transmission affecting the acoustic testing.
In the process of installing Resilient Channels, there can be several errors made in which can have a detrimental impact on the acoustic performance of an overall system. If the plasterboard layer is over tightened and breaches the wall, the channel will become crushed or bent, and the soundproofing qualities are now lost. MuteClip® is designed for a single fixing per clip, and the Channel is snapped into place - removing potential errors made during the installation. The reduction of low-end frequencies is superior with the MuteClip® and Channel systems, essential for the reduction of impact noise.
In the majority of cases, we would recommend removing the existing stud frame battening with the addition of substantial weight - on the odd occasion we can look to add the use of acoustic hangers to assist in providing extra support per square meter. If you want to use the existing frame, have it checked by specialist joinery or acoustic installation personnel prior. If a robust timber frame has been installed, it is likely we could use this - but we would follow the same process as above and have it reviewed.
When solid surfaces are in contact with one another they transmit vibrations, so if a soundproofing ceiling system is abutted tightly up to the adjacent walls, any vibrations through Flanking Transmission will now be found moving back through in to what was supposed to be the suspended ceiling, short-circuiting the MuteClip® and Channel and degrading the acoustic performance. It will also limit the ceiling’s suspension and reaction to any impact noise, again dampening its performance.
This will all depend on the thickness of stud frame, in which generally a 100mm thickness is recommended to support weights, with a gap from framework usually suspended at 10mm as a minimum but often more realistically to deal with any fluctuations in the ceiling and the 41mm suspension gap between MuteClip® and Channel, 150mm would be suitable for this installation. Do not use thicker sizes to compress more material in; this will harm the acoustic performance by re-establishing a connection between the concrete substrate and Acoustic Plasterboard - degrading the performance.
All existing plasterboard and frameworks that are inadequate must be removed before installation to allow a secure fitting, and it can also help to uncover any potential issues that may affect the acoustic performance or fitting - especially in properties that are being converted where old decorative features could be challenging to work around. Cornice, coving and any other decorations will require removal either prior or during the installation price - we would quote for such removal if you require all done in one process, and electronics will need extending to the new depths by a Part P Registered electrician and made safe for our team to pull through the new insert hole.
