MuteClip® (Patent Pending) Stud Double Plus is perfect for projects that require the best solution for ceiling soundproofing in concrete builds, one that is very high performing for both airborne and impact noise. Its higher performance comes from a combination of both the separated stud framework that creates lesser points of contact with concrete soffit ceiling and using our MuteClip® which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber this is attached to a new or existing framework. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip®  and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of a dense layer of SoundPlank 19mm, a layer of Tecsound and a layer of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspend away from the concrete slab. What this ultimately results in is a vastly improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as a substantial reduction of impact noise and other forms of vibration, which are often problematic in concrete constructions.

Are you prepared?

How to Install

Installation is based on a standard 400mm  joist spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip®  at 400mm in a grid configuration with a MuteClip at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

  • When installed under the correct guidance this system is compliant with the required acoustic values for airborne and impact transmission featured in Part E Building Regulations; these are applicable across the UK, excluding Scotland (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland. We would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on an Acoustic System.

MuteClip® Concrete Stud Double Plus is the highest performing of our current systems for substantial reduction of airborne and impact noise; its stud frame helps to cut as much direct contact from the surface and is suspended on the MuteClip® and Channel for maximum isolation. Soundproofing against everyday household noises across the board of day-to-day conversations, to raised voices, neighbours having their television and music turned up on frequency occasions and heavy footsteps on hardened flooring. One major acoustic issue with concrete structures is it’s subject to high levels of Flanking Transmission - this is where noise issues are found in adjacent walls also and would require adequate soundproofing too. With this in mind, focusing on the ceiling area we would expect between 15-20dB improvement across both airborne noise and impact noise, a 67-75% reduction of noise issues as guidance - all depending on your current structure.

Any audio focused space requires a lot of attention to detail to making sure that the impact of both noise issues internally within your own space, and those who are in close-proximity are protected as best as possible. Low frequencies are in high volume, which are the sound waves that travel great distances through both airborne and structural vibration. The combination of mass and separation is incredibly essential on all surfaces to break the path for any sound moving through the mass of the system. Acoustic systems that are applied directly may not reach the acquired level of soundproofing. This makes MuteClip® Concrete Stud Double Plus perfect for this type of applications, the use of acoustic isolation clips have been used in a range of projects to great success - and we will continue to use them alongside stud framing to ensure that all your hard work, planning and use of the space can be made frequently.

With adequate wall soundproofing solutions put in place to protect from Flanking Transmission, this acoustic system is capable of surpassing and Part E Building Regulations across all requirements. It may be that the introduction of soundproofing over screed or under screed is required on the floor above to protect from flanking through impact, often found as the reason why acoustic tests fail.

We have seen on too many occasions the effects of incorrect installation of Resilient Bars, which are often the reasons for failed acoustic tests. This then results in complete removal of everything and starting fresh - a cost of both time and overall budget. MuteClip® and Channel have been designed to prevent incorrect fixings, with a single fixing required per clip and the Channel is snapped in. With sound isolation clips such as our MuteClip®, there are low-end frequency improvements superior to the use of Resilient Channel, significant when used in environments that harbour large amounts of low-end sound energy.

In the majority of stud frame installations, especially in new builds - they may only support the use of a double plasterboard layer, and in older properties may only support a single layer - or will be severely bowing to where to fixture of MuteClip® would be difficult or unsafe. If you feel it can be supported, we would recommend a joiner to survey the current framework, a structural engineer or an acoustic specialist - some may be able to have additional support given to strengthen the central part of the ceiling where it is weakest.

As we talk of isolation and the treatment of vibration, this is also very important - an isolation gap must be left between Acoustic Plasterboard, and the adjacent wall surfaces to prevent any Flanking Transmission short-circuiting the MuteClip® and Channel and degrading the performance. If the SoundPlank and Acoustic Plasterboard are abutted tightly to those surfaces, it will also reduce the suspension of the acoustic system, something important in the reduction of low frequencies and impact noise.

For the total void space that is often left, 150mm is the maximum that can be used, calculating the isolation gap of stud frame to the concrete substrate, the thickness of stud frame and MuteClip® and Channel. Do not attempt to compress more into the void as this will bridge the gap between the concrete substrate and the acoustic system, degrading the overall performance.

All existing ceiling that is not adequate for harbouring soundproofing, current frameworks for example - need to be removed alongside plasterboard and any existing insulation. This removal also helps to review any potential concrete decorations that could cause issues or need to be factored into the acoustic design. Coving, cornice and any other decoration will also require to be removed, and electronics extended to the new depth of the acoustic system before installation.
