MuteClip® (Patent Pending) Stud Double Plus is our most robust option for projects that require a wall soundproofing solution that provides an excellent acoustic performance. This high performance comes from a combination of both the separated stud framework that creates lesser points of contact with the existing wall partition ceiling and using our MuteClip® which is composed of a dual density rubber in a galvanised metal case - acting as a shock absorber. The MuteClip® Channel affixed to the MuteClip® and the new soundproof wall which is composed of a layer of SoundPlank 19mm, Tecsound, and a dense layer Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspends away from the partition wall,  ultimately resulting in our most improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle lower frequencies, as well as reducing immediate vibrations.

Making sure you are prepared

  • Conduct prior sound testing or home testing to draw attention to any potential flanking paths (where sound takes an alternative route), and this will be an essential part of making sure you have the best soundproofing in place and managing what is possible to achieve, our team can help guide you on this.
  • You will need to make sure you are fixing directly into the brick/block work and not fixing over existing plasterboard (this may require levelling before installation)
  • To lay Acoustic Mineral Wool between flooring and ceiling joists to help reduce flanking transmission
  • Loss of space approximate 180mm

How to Install

Installation is based on a 600mm spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip®  at 1200mm in a diamond configuration with a MuteClip®  at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

  • If the framework is not already installed, this would require fixture with Isolation Strips to maintain maximum separation.
  • MuteClip®  fixed to the framework
  • 100mm overlap on MuteClip® Channel with four self-tapping screws into the shoulders of the MuteClip® Channels, running parallel with the joists.
  • Insert acoustic mineral wool between the joists.
  • The first layer of SoundPlank 19mm fixed on to MuteClip®  Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant)
  • A layer of Tecsound SY70 adhered with self-adhesive backing to Acoustic Plasterboard
  • The second layer of Acoustic Plasterboard fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant)

Compliance with Part E Building Regulations and Scottish Building Regulations

  • When installed under the correct guidance this system is compliant with the required acoustic values for airborne transmission featured in Part E Building Regulations; these are applicable across the UK, excluding Scotland (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland. We would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on an Acoustic System.
  • It is also compliant with the required acoustic values for airborne transmission featured in the Building Standards Technical Handbook 2017 for Scotland. With intrusive noises invading the home, there can be a real heightening of stress and anxiety - especially if your regular sleep pattern or quality of sleep is disturbed. Noisy neighbour issues are one of the most common and can often break down in communication, especially where excessive noises such as allowing doors to slam, shouting and conflicts and heavy music. MuteClip® Stud Double Plus will help to reduce all these issues, but its overall result needs to take in to account any untreated areas to wear noise issues continue to come through, adjacent walls, floor and ceiling cavities, and any pipework that is boxed in. With this acoustic system, we would look to see a 15-20dB improvement as a guide, without the factors above, which is a 65-75% reduction of the noise as an average.

As an acoustic solution to maintaining the ongoing success or personal enjoyment of any audio focused room, this is the best soundproofing fit for each purpose. There is significant mass featured in this system which helps to reduce the transfer of sound energy from room to room, while the separation through the stud framing and the suspension the wall is now given from the use of the MuteClip®, low-end frequencies are mitigated in both of these processes. They can be used in dedicated outhouses, music instrument practice rooms at home and general music production at home. This system should be installed alongside adequate ceiling and flooring soundproofing solutions.

With current data and understanding of the performance of acoustic clips in the marketplace, Mute Clip™ Stud Double Plus will often surpass Part E Building Regulations in both conversion projects and in new build specifications. You will want to assure that all adjacent surfaces are adequately treated to prevent Flanking Transmission, a typical noise issue that is neglected that often leads to the failure of Pre-Completion Testing.

The incorrect fittings possible with Resilient Bar are numerous and can often lead to failure of Part E Building Regulations from improper installation, or a lesser result used in other soundproofing scenarios. The MuteClip® and Channel combination need only a single fixing per clip with no way of incorrectly fitting the channel, and it is merely snapped in. The acoustic performance, especially towards the lower frequencies, offers an improvement over Resilient Channels.

It all depends on the size of the framework you are considering, generally, with this weight a 75mm would be best for support. You want to make sure an isolation gap is factored in between the stud framing and the solid partition wall of at least 10mm, the MuteClip® and Channel offers 41mm of additional space. A10mm airgap on either side of the acoustic mineral wool should be left, which is the primary partition wall and 1st layer of Acoustic Plasterboard - do not double up or compress additional Acoustic Mineral Wool in between believing that it will improve acoustic performance, it will most likely reduce it - a 75mm Acoustic Mineral Wool would be most appropriate here

When contact is made between the rigid adjacent surfaces of walls, floors and ceilings with the Acoustic Plasterboard, you have created a shortcut for vibration to travel back through by way of flanking - maintaining this break is vital to achieve the best soundproofing possible. Leave a gap as close as you can without touching and fill with Acoustic Sealant.

Dot and dab plasterboard should always be removed where possible to gain the best acoustic protection against noise issues, leaving them in place allows a cavity that is free-flowing and will allow sound to travel through - even on adjacent walls. If they cannot be removed in adjacent walls, cut into the depth of the acoustic system and seal around this, making sure contact of the new soundproof wall is close to the external and internal framework. Noise can still travel through walls, especially lightweight walls - so sound may go further down these adjacent walls and into the dot and dab cavities that are left. All wall decorations including coving, cornice and skirting boards must be removed, soundproofing up to them will allow significant gaps to where sound can travel through.
