MuteBoard™ 2 Internal is a wall soundproofing system that seeks to either install MuteBoard to an existing stud frame, or the creation of new ones to split up an area into multiple rooms. Where the available depth of room is at a premium, MuteBoard 2 Internal will help to retain this while producing a high performing acoustic barrier against typical household or workplace noise issues. This combination of stud framework and MuteBoard™ 2 will help to reduce raised airborne noise issues that standard plasterboard or acoustic plasterboard will not be sufficient in reducing. This system also includes Acoustic Mineral Wool to be fit between the studs, at no less than 45kg per m3, and use of Isolation Strips around new timber or metal frames to separate it from adjacent surfaces that could be prone to causing Flanking Transmission. It is all these materials combined that make it ideal for 'future-proofing' against noise issues that are found in the home or workplace,  or between existing rooms that suffer from intrusive background noise levels.

How to Install

  • Isolate the stud framing using Isolation Strips

  • 9 x 5mm x 60mm wood screw fixings into each Muteboard™ 2 leaving a 2-5mm gap from adjacent walls, floor and ceiling
  • Fix MuteBoard™ 2 with tapered edge vertically

Noise issues are one of the major conflicts that exist between neighbours as the majority of the UK housing stock is poorly insulated to reduce the transference of noise, if the building or conversion was completed before 2003 then there were no building regulations concerning sound then to control it, often leaving very little in the way of resistance to even the most basic of noise issues. The neighbour noise issues can be as simple as somebody walking through their home, to having what would be considered 'regular' levels of conversations in terms of volume and watching television and if exposed to these noises daily they can become disruptive, and for some somewhat stressful. MuteBoard™ 2 Internal focuses on internal stud wall partitions which still exist between dwellings, primarily in conversion projects (please look at our FAQ concerning Part E Regulations below for more information). MuteBoard™ 2 will be a significant soundproofing upgrade when using the system to replace anything current which is often thermal insulation and standard plasterboard combination. For clearly heard levels of noises heard you would want to review your soundproofing options to upgrade for a better result.

Where irritating noise heard between internal partitions in both commercial and industrial projects, MuteBoard™ 2 Internal is suited for use in all types of internal soundproofing projects and this includes office soundproofing or general workplace upgrades offering very little space to work with, for example, a small printing room with door and window frames allow very little room and MuteBoard™ 2 can be used alongside opening the structure to install acoustic insulation, this example presents a distraction that can be reduced with this system in place. In industrial settings, the same applies, for building an encasing framework MuteBoard™ 2 can be used here too. It is also suitable for boxing in noise pipework too, all that needs to be installed is a sturdy framework alongside acoustic insulation and our MuteBoard™ 2 to reduce the noise, it is common to find piping in empty cavities that amplify the sound.

Part E Building Regulations are required for all new conversions and new builds, unless there is a scenario to where any particular circumstance exempt you from requiring to (where you will want to speak your Building Control or Council Officer) such as listed building status - you will need to have your building project pass each target. It may only be that conversion projects would concern using an internal framework to separate dwellings in this scenario. It may be that MuteBoard™ 2 is fitted on both sides with high-density acoustic mineral wool to pass the airborne figures, alongside the correct flanking path treatment with floor and ceiling acoustic systems installed to prevent failure in this region. We would suggest though to aim to create a separating element at least somewhere in the system with mounting on to our MuteClip® system where space permits.

Depending on the age and thickness of the stud frame, this will often determine whether it can support the additional weight of MuteBoard™ 2. Timber and metal frameworks less than the 46-50mm may require replacing or strengthening to support this extra weight - you will also need to consider the importance of the Acoustic Mineral Wool installed here when tallying up the weight. Specialist structural engineers (if it is a large project) may be beneficial in surveying the broader aspects of construction when adding significant weights over a specific area, local joiners with experience will also most likely be able to advise. If there is any sign of damage such as cracking or bending - then we recommend replacing the frame. New stud frames will also benefit from the use of our Isolation Strip to provide decoupling from the surrounding surfaces, helping to reduce immediate vibration transfer.

Just as above, this all depends on the thickness of the stud frame, but the principle of applying Acoustic Mineral Wool to any cavity is to make sure you do not compress between two surfaces, these two surfaces, for instance, is between the two plasterboards on a stud frame. Forcing in acoustic insulation of 100mm into a 50mm cavity is not beneficial and will create an immediate path for the sound to travel through. Air gaps are helpful when coupled with an insulating material as it allows it to absorb noise found in the cavity. The rule here is to have at least a 10mm air gap on either side, so if the stud frame is 100mm in thickness, use a 75mm Acoustic Mineral Wool.
