MuteClip® (Patent Pending) Double Plus is our best performing option for projects that require a ceiling soundproofing solution that is both very high performing and space-conscious at only 80mm. It works by creating lesser points of contact with the joist ceiling using our MuteClip® which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip® and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of a dense layer of SoundPlank 19mm, a layer of Tecsound and a layer of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspend away from the ceiling joists. What this ultimately results in is a vastly improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing impact noise and other forms of light vibration.

Are you prepared?

  • Conduct prior sound testing or home testing to draw attention to any potential flanking paths (where sound takes an alternative route), and this will be an essential part of making sure you have the best soundproofing in place and managing what is possible to achieve, our team can help guide you on this.

How to Install

Installation is based on a standard 400mm joist spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip® at 400mm in a grid configuration with a MuteClip® at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

  • MuteClip® is fixed to the bottom of the joists
  • 200mm overlap on MuteClip® Channel with four self-tapping screws into the shoulders of the  MuteClip® Channel, running perpendicular to the joist.
  • Rockwool RW3 between joists
  • The first layer of SoundPlank 19mm fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screw (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant)
  • A layer of Tecsound adhered with self-adhesive backing to Acoustic Plasterboard
  • The second layer of Acoustic Plasterboard fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant)

We would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on an Acoustic System.

As an upgrade to MuteClip® Double, this system only comes with an additional 4mm in thickness at a total of 79mm, depending on the fluctuation of the material. The extra mass of SoundPlank and that mass is all separated by our Tecsound membrane, isolated from the structure and suspended on MuteClip® and Channel makes for a very effective ceiling soundproofing option. For those looking for the best possible sound reduction of both impact and airborne noise for ceilings, this would be the solution. The fixture direct to the joists with our sound isolation clips will help to drastically improve airborne and impact noise, as a guide we expect to see between a 10-20dB reduction, which is 50-75% of the noise reduced as an average, anything with low-frequency content such as the use of a subwoofer from above will still present structural issues. You will also want to check for Flanking Transmission down adjacent walls, especially where dot and dab or stud frame walls are in place.

All typical household and commercial office based noises are reduced with this system, even the use in manufacturing plants or automobile testing facilities such as a dyno-tuning have seen this implemented and with excellent performance. It can also be used in audio focused areas such as soundproofing recording studios that are limited on space or audio mixing and mastering facilities that are unable to construct a new ceiling. The aim in any soundproofing projects is to reduce noises down to background levels, as complete removal of any noise requires incredible mass and structural alterations. Sound is also subjective, so those with noise sensitivities such as Hyperacusis, or any other form of disability that creates symptoms with sensitivities to sound would need to be factored into what can be achieved with these.

With all Flanking paths adequately assessed and soundproofed appropriately, the MuteClip® Double Plus is capable of exceeding Part E Building Regulations across to board for impact and airborne sound insulation values. With new builds, we can assist in creating partition designs to line up to best estimates of outcome from the Pre Completion Testing stage. With current builds that are unable to lift floors above, an acoustic underlay such as our MuteMat® 2 or MuteMat® 3 would be best fitted to avoid substantial impact transferring into the walls and taking alternative paths.

We wanted to design Mute Clip™ and Channel to be a straight forward system to install with little to no errors possible to make during the installation phase - it requires a single fixing per MuteClip®, and the MuteClip® Channel snaps into place. There are several issues we have experienced first hand with the installation of Resilient Channel, and we have discussed them in our blog here. Our MuteClip® systems offer a higher level of suspension, lesser points of contact to which is essential for the attenuation of vibration from structural borne noises and airborne noise levels containing a large amount of low-frequency sound energy.

Abutting both the SoundPlank and Acoustic Plasterboard to the adjacent walls creates many points of contact in which Flanking Transmission found in any walls will flow straight into these layers, amplifying noise issues from skipping the isolation provided by the MuteClip® and Channel. With tight abutting you also reduce the suspension in the ceiling, this restricts its attenuation of structural borne vibration and large amounts of sound energy in the low frequencies. Make sure to leave an isolation gap with no points of contact of 2-5mm and run a bead of Acoustic Sealant down it to prevent air flow, this should be repeated for each layer except for Tecsound, which can be in contact with the adjacent surfaces due to its material type and the way it behaves with vibration.

All depending on your thickness of joist, you will often find that the majority of builds harbour a 2x8 joist - 50.8 x 203.2 or more significant depending on the span of the room, so with this example, 200mm in total would be sufficient - that is two 100mm slabs of sound insulating Acoustic Mineral Wool. In any size of the joist you want to have at least a 10mm air gap on either side of the MuteClip® Channel and the floor above, do not compress more in as it will create a direct path for sound to travel, short-circuiting the MuteClip®.

All decorative features such as cornice or coving will require removal either prior or during the installation, and any existing plasterboard will need removing too. Lath and plaster ceilings will often require removing to make sure that there is a secure fit, but often these are installed over the top of due to the process of removal - which is the better option of the two begins it means we can treat the cavity beyond it. Electronics such as motion sensors, light fixtures and alarms will all need extending by an electrician prior and made safe for any installation team to pull through the required insertion holes made in the system.
