MuteMat® Gym 51 is our practical gym soundproofing platform made of robust high quality and yields incredible acoustic performance on concrete floors in Gymnasiums and Fitness centres. They reduce high impact noise levels and create separation from the structural floor. It has a broad range of uses which are suitable for professional and commercial gyms, person fitness rooms and use in hotel fitness and spa areas. Specific areas to where our MuteMat® Gym 51 is best used is regarding and dropping of weights, Crossfit areas and multi-stack weight lifting machines, to protect against impact noise. It is easy to install because of its modular style fitting and Kros-Loc design around each tile; this then only needs to be bonded to the concrete floor. No floor finishing is required and has slip-resistant qualities.

Acoustic Gym Design and the Importance of Soundproofing

 

Both sound insulation and optimum sound control are essential for not only urban, multi-purpose building based Fitness Centres or Gyms, but also with protection against internal noises by placing large weighted areas close to areas that require an environment to be without external noise issues. Two of the most significant impacts are on adjacent residential properties and businesses, to where disruption to daily lives or companies can be readily heard with considerable blunt impact noise and structural vibration. With the ever-increasing urban and central city populations, convenience is often vital to winning the business of its many residents - but these are usually in multi-purpose complexes, so it won’t be uncommon to find residences right next door.

 

Seeking the correct soundproofing materials for the purpose is of most importance to help prevent this disruption, without this, complaints may arise either in the long term, or in an incredibly short amount of time - this could lead to the reduction of the services you can provide to your members or the complete closure of your premises.

 

Careful planning is required throughout, and this is why we recommend specifying from the beginning with a Gym Noise Impact Assessment, more information can be found below.

If you are looking to create a new Gym, renovate an existing one or have been asked to look at the impact your gym may have on the community by way of creating excessive noise - we would highly recommend a comprehensive Gym Noise Impact Assessment. It will give you perhaps additional considerations across areas you may have expected such as the overall planning of the gym floor, what level of sound insulation you require so that disturbances are minimal and in some occasions, deciding your available opening times. There will also be the placement of speakers so that music being played through the P.A does not negate any acoustic systems, or are mounted in a way that causes issues to neighbour properties, or noise sensitive spaces.

 

The proposal of a new Fitness Centre or Gymnasium would benefit hugely from a comprehensive Gym Noise Impact Assessment, not only to protect neighbours but the control of noise within the gym itself. It helps assist in the planning of internal spaces, placement of speakers for music, what effect large weight drops in certain areas is likely to have upon its surroundings and how airborne noise may travel through various paths. We can then take this information and put together the right acoustic systems from our MuteMat® Gym range - sustaining your business for the future.

General Impact Testing

 

With already existing Gyms looking to expand their services, there could be noise issues from the adjacent weight dropping areas in which could dramatically reduce the use or experience of rooms. Nobody wants to be cooling down in the presence of large weighted thuds or creating a space of wellness area next to an aerobics class, causing them stress. This would involve a drop test on a variety of MuteMat® Gym products as solo options and like with this acoustic system, combining them with or MuteMat® Gym SFP range to help with achieving soundproofing targets.

There are a whole host of activities that take place in a Gym or Fitness centre, usually spanning from morning till evening - and the majority of which will require dedicated soundproofing products and systems to reduce their potential effect on adjacent residences and businesses. Depending on the type of activity, a specific system may need to be in place for it’s reduction, or if the required acoustic insulation values are high - something more robust. A Noise Impact Assessment will provide the best coverage of what is required in all these events, and will help to look at which areas MuteMat® Gym 51 would be best suited.

 

MuteMat® Gym 51 can be used in areas to where weight-machines, pulled weights and free weights are used. Or installed in areas where large weight drops are made but the noise sensitivity in the immediate area is low. It can also be used for the reduction of vibration found in spin-cycles and other cardiovascular based machinery that generates low frequency noise.

 

Depending on your noise issue, in most cases MuteMat® Gym 51 will help to vastly improve impact transmission results. There are of course a few areas of concern that may require something more robust, for instance to where there are high acoustic insulation values that need to be met, and in noise sensitive areas. MuteMat® Gym 51 can be installed retrospectively.

 

With the broad range of noises that a gym or fitness centre create, it would be wise to carry a Noise Impact Assessment to avoid issues in both the long-term future and in the very short term. Depending on your location though and the intended use of your gym, for example it is based in a separate building of a suburb without any close proximity structures - a series of General Impact Noise may be adequate, although we cannot guarantee acoustic performance in other areas or to any set acoustic targets as a holistic review of how it could affect adjacent internal rooms, or the effects of Flanking Transmission.

 

The often incredible mass that is dropped in both of these activities may not be best treated with MuteMat® Gym 51, and will often need to be something more robust and combined with other materials - especially when in close proximity to other properties of both home and business. MuteBloc™ should also be used in conjunction to provide maximum soundproofing against such impact noise.

 

Noise Impact Assessments, as we have mentioned - harbour all the information key to the success of running a gym or fitness centre without disruption to local homes and businesses. It is not just impact noise that is the concern, but general everyday activities and functioning of a gym that could often be neglected for focus on the impact. Airborne noise from the conversation of classes, shouting and clashing of weights will often find their way through walls and ceilings - requiring both soundproofing systems on both surfaces. There is also the air-conditioning units featured above hanging ceilings which cause very low end vibrations that travel through structures with ease.

 

There is also an importance on how the sound behaves in the room internally, and this is the measurement of reverberation and to what level it is. Spaces with high levels of reverberation can exacerbate the noise by creating long decay times leading to negative experiences felt by members not being able to fully engage with activities that involve instructions or a sense of community when unable to engage with other members. This issue is treated by the introduction of dedicated sound absorption panelling and hanging baffles to minimise the decay of sound in such room and our sound absorption range can be tailored to your brand by selected designs, colours and sculptures to stand-out or blend in.
