MuteClip® (Patent Pending) LP Single is our slimmest option for projects that require a ceiling soundproofing solution that performs to a high standard and reduces head height loss without the compromise of acoustic performance. It creates lesser points of contact with the joist ceiling using our MuteClip® LP which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber and this bolts to a bracket that allows both MuteClip® and Channel to nest into the joist. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip® LP and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of a single layer of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspend away from the ceiling joists. What this ultimately results in is an improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing impact noise and other forms of light vibration.
MuteClip® LP Single is available for specification on a wide range of projects that include large scale residential builds, commercial properties for increased privacy and perfect for soundproofing the home. This system is also suitable as a retrofit for those looking to improve existing properties.

Installation is based on a standard 400mm joist spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip® at 400mm in a grid configuration with a MuteClip® at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

Regarding Scottish Building Regulations we would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on this Acoustic System as they contain higher targets than that of Part E, our Legal Requirements section has the required acoustic values.

The MuteClip® LP or Low Profile is attached to the side of the joist instead of on the bottom as does the standard Mute Clip™. What this means is that it can be placed to the desired level of where you would like your new ceiling, with the Channel sitting only slightly below the joist, this then allows for the Acoustic Plasterboard to be fitted. The ceiling still has the same level of suspension and isolation as any other standard MuteClip® options, and acoustic performance across both airborne and impact noise are not affected in any way. You will need to make sure there is isolation between the acoustic plasterboard and joist, because with it touching or having it too close under more substantial impact noise issues will short circuit the system. As a guide to the soundproofing values for airborne and impact, we would expect to see a 5-8dB improvement for airborne and 5-10dB for impact, which is 25-40% and 25-50% respectively. flanking paths down any untreated walls will affect performance.
With traditional overboard attached directly to the ceiling such as Acoustic Plasterboard or any other high-density acoustic boarding - the MuteClip® LP will offer minimal height loss with the suspension that is important for increased airborne and impact soundproofing. Noise issues will be reduced across common household noise levels such as those featured above, but as the sound is subjective others may have a certain level of hearing sensitivity that can be medical or through it being apparent for such a long time, that it’s become a trigger for stress issues.
As structures differ from building to building, and from room to room in a single dwelling or structure, the airborne and impact estimated values will be close to passing Part E Building Regulations. It is advised to seek an acoustic underlay on any flooring above to reduce any potential flanking down adjacent walls, especially where impact noise is concerned. With new builds, we can create estimates of acoustic results in a partition design to help with the specification.
With our MuteClip® LP, there is a little more to its installation to make sure that the ceiling is level so that contact is not made between the joist and Acoustic Plasterboard. There is a little more to fix than the standard MuteClip® - but it still has no incorrect way of fitting it that it cannot be over tightened nor crushed, two characteristic fixings errors made during the installation of Resilient Channel. Another significant point is that Resilient Channel cannot be installed to save room height; there is only one way to fix them.
Leaving an isolation gap is very important to where you wish to break contact with adjacent surfaces that could flank noise such as tightly abutting the Acoustic Plasterboard layer to the adjacent walls. If any vibration is detected in these nearby areas it will transfer back into the plasterboard - short-circuiting the MuteClip® and Channel. Again, tightly abutting will also reduce the ceiling’s suspension in reaction to structural borne vibration and low-frequency sound energy - negatively impacting the systems acoustic performance.
Depending on the thickness of your joists, this will determine the amount of Acoustic Mineral Wool to use in the given cavity. Since MuteClip® LP has a low profile, we do not have the same isolation gap as when they are fixed on the bottom of joist, and we will need to reduce the amount of space given. Typical joist depths found in the majority of residences are of 2x8 inches or 50.8 x 203.2, so perhaps only 150mm total thickness of Acoustic Mineral Wool would be appropriate. We recommend leaving an air gap of at least 10mm from the MuteClip® Channel and the floor above, tightly compacting in additional sound insulation will harm acoustic performance.
All decorative features such as coving and cornicing need removing, as well as any existing plasterboard and lath and plaster for the MuteClip® LP, requires fitting on the side of the joist. Electronics such as light fixtures, alarms or motion sensors, for example, would need wiring extended to accommodate the new depths and moved, this work would be carried out by a registered electrician.
