MuteClip® (Patent Pending)  XP Single is the slimmest option in our XP range for projects that require a ceiling soundproofing solution that performs to a high standard and can accommodate varying joist depths and differing ceiling heights without resulting to additional joist levelling or ad-hoc methods of installation. It works by creating lesser points of contact with the joist ceiling using our MuteClip®  XP which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber and this is bolted to an extension bracket that allows for an additional 100mm of spacing for accommodating varying depths. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip®  XP and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of a single layer of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspend away from the ceiling joists. What this ultimately results in is an improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing impact noise and other forms of light vibration.

Making sure you are prepared

  • Conduct prior sound testing or home testing to draw attention to any potential flanking paths (where sound takes an alternative path), and this will be an essential part of making sure you have the best soundproofing in place and managing what is possible to achieve, our team can help guide you on this.
  • You will need to make sure you are fixing MuteClip® XP direct into the joist without any obstruction
  • To lay Acoustic Mineral Wool between any adjacent stud framing or cavity walls to help reduce flanking transmission

How to Install

Installation is based on a standard 400mm  joist spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip® at 400mm in a grid configuration with a MuteClip® at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

  • MuteClip®  XP fixed to the side of the joists.
  • 200mm overlap on MuteClip® Channel with four self-tapping screws into the shoulders of the  MuteClip® Channel, running horizontally.
  • Acoustic Mineral Wool between joists.
  • A layer of Acoustic Plasterboard fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant).

MuteClip® XP or extended profile helps to create a level ceiling to where joists bow or rooms heights differ to where two separate rooms now exist as one - so instead of battening out and levelling through this time costly method - MuteClip® XP can be fitted to the side of the joist to allow up to 100mm indifference of heights. At least three fixings are required into the L bracket. Acoustic performance does not differ with this system, and all results are comparable to our standard MuteClip®. You will need to take care in making sure that the Acoustic Plasterboard layer is not in contact or too close to the joists at the complete levelling phase as this could cause impact noise and vibration to travel into it - reducing the ceilings isolation.

With traditional plasterboard fixtures to joists and lath and plaster ceilings, both lend to a lot of impact noise transferring through various routes dues to all the points of contact, as well as often having open cavities to where sound resonates. To improve both airborne and impact noise you need to achieve separation by lesser points of contact to vastly improve them, so with the issues above, these are all reduced. Sounds heard with clarity, additional soundproofing such as our upgrade to MuteClip® XP Double will help to assist in bringing these down to a more suited level. It is vital to remember sound is subjective and some may have a certain level of hearing sensitivity that is set off by medical conditions or through triggered associations with the noises apparent for such a long time, that it’s become a trigger for stress issues.

Buildings differ from structure to structure, and within those structures they differ from room to room, there are no two alike even if they appear that way - there are different flanking paths, different levels of quality in the build and building material fluctuations that all lend to shaping the soundproofing or, in some cases give poorly to soundproofing. With Part E Building Regulations for a timber structure, it would be advisable to install a floor soundproofing solution above to deal with impact noise at source. With new build plans, we can create partition designs to look at the best options and suggested acoustic figures for meeting set acoustic targets, like Part E Building Regulations.

Resilient Channels do not offer a ceiling levelling option like our MuteClip® XP does, which is a bonus for anyone looking to create a single ceiling structure that features structural twists and bends.

Isolation is incredibly vital in soundproofing and acoustics in general, especially when it comes to negating Flanking Transmission. If the Acoustic Plasterboard finish is abutted or in contact through poor cutting - any vibration found in adjacent walls with this connection made will break the isolation created by MuteClip®, and it’s Channel leading to a reduction in the system’s acoustic performance. If the plasterboard is fitted tightly, it will also reduce to ceiling’s suspension to dealing with impact noise transmission through lack of movement. So leaving an isolation gap is essential during installation.

Joist thickness will determine the total depth of Acoustic Mineral Wool you should look to install, and also the different levelling of MuteClip® XP - but with the different room spans and the joist thicknesses, there is no one answer. A typical joist depth found in most residences of 2x8 inches or 50.8 x 203.2, so a total thickness of 150mm of Acoustic Mineral Wool should be installed. It is recommended to leave an air gap of at least 10mm from the MuteClip® Channel and the floor above, tightly compacting in additional sound insulation will reduce the system’s performance.

All decorative features such as coving found on ceilings, cornicing or ornamental elements that are not built into the structure will require removing before installation. For any wall features that would impede on the final ceiling depth, these will also need removing. The same goes for electronics - light fixtures, alarms or motion sensors; for example, and these require wiring extended to accommodate the new depths and possible relocation, a registered electrician should conduct this work. Plasterboard or a Lath and Plaster ceiling would also need to be removed to allow the fitting of the MuteClip® XP.
