NOISE REDUCTION

Hear the difference.

Play the video to hear the airborne sound difference before and after installing this system. For best results try to match the volume of the unreduced audio to the volume of the noise you’re able to hear.

The noise in the video has been digitally reduced to give you an idea of the sorts of results you could expect. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect science and your personal results could vary due to myriad reasons. However, we have found our customers prefer to hear a decibel reduction rather than read it!

We stand for quality, and we are proud of it.

Our MuteMat® 2 Pro system is a high-performing solution for soundproofing timber floors, and this system covers a range of scenarios. This system seeks to improve both airborne and impact noise issues while offering you something slim with an excellent performance against even the most intrusive noises.

MuteMat® 2 is compressible, while still dense, and is combined in this system alongside Versafloor® 18mm, a cement particle board, which is a dense mix of concrete and chipboard, providing a rigid and heavy barrier against airborne noise. In addition, Tecsound, a visco-elastic material reduces vibration and breaks down sound energy by turning it into heat. There is also Acoustic Mineral Wool to fit between the joists, at no less than 45kg per m3 and the use of isolation strips to provide a floating floor function.

It is all these materials combined that make it ideal for those looking to achieve the best floor soundproofing possible, to reduce overhearing of a clear conversation, bringing levels of footsteps down to background noise levels and even the use of HIFI audio devices. Although these are noise issues commonly associated with what you find at home, especially in dense-living, multiple dwellings, these disturbances are similar to those you hear in the workplace. We recommend this system for both homes and workplaces.

How to install floor soundproofing

This video showcases how to soundproof your floor.

Soundproofing floors between joists

Using high-density mineral wool is highly effective at soundproofing floors between joists. Noise bounces around in empty cavities and they act like a drum transferring noise to your room. If you fill these cavities with dense acoustic mineral wool it helps absorb sound.

  • If you have multiple adjacent surfaces or partitions to soundproof input them individually. Not as a total m2 input as this will affect the results.
  • If you have windows, fireplaces or other fixed structures we recommend booking a call with us before purchasing.

MuteMat® 2 Premium Plus is a combination of dense, compressible and vibration-reducing soundproofing materials that work incredibly well to all reduce noises of footsteps, with even the heaviest footed, dropping of objects and moving of general furniture such as the scrapping of a chair as somebody moves suddenly.

Depending on what is currently in place will greatly affect the level of reduction you will achieve, there will be a dramatic increase in acoustic performance for example on exposed floorboards changed over for this system, but with some properties, they may have no ceiling and currently have exposed joists – to where noise issues will still be there. As a guide, we would look to see a 10-15dB reduction overall for impact noise, 50-67% of noise issues reduced as an average.

It is the various dense layers of both Tecsound and MuteMat® 2 that provide the mass to reduce airborne noise, especially if using Tecsound S100 as an upgrade. Often we find that noise issues such as conversation, television and low-level music without the use of large high-fidelity systems are reduced.

We would expect to see up to 10dB reduction for airborne noise issues in the middle to higher frequencies, 10dB is a 50% reduction in terms of loudness levels.

Some offices don’t harbour excessive noise issues so can be relatively comparable with those found at home, conversation for example – being of primary concern for both privacy issues and of focus.

Large offices that harbour large teams all on phones for extended periods of time and office equipment of large printers can often be problematic. MuteMat® 2 Premium Plus is entirely suitable for both applications.

It is always recommended whenever it is possible to treat the cavities below the flooring, for missing this important part of the installation out can lead to a drop in acoustic performance, especially for airborne noise.

Leaving a cavity untreated results in all sounds passing through as a boom-like sound, or a whooshing – continuing to amplify beyond the MuteMat® 2. It is also a clear path for sound to flank into other weaker areas or through flooring voids into another space. Impact noise is still affected by leaving an open cavity but if the floor cannot be lifted you will see often still see a greater lift in the reduction of impact noise.

Tecsound is a dense, visco-elastic membrane which means it is somewhere between a viscous material and an elastic one which properties help to mitigate vibration. It’s density which ranges depending on the Tecsound SY50, Tecsound SY70 or Tecsound S100 of 5kg, 7kg and 10kg per square meter respectively, and remember – mass is important in the reduction of airborne transmission. So Tecsound in this instance helps bring the further damping of vibrations and addition mass for the reduction of airborne.

For all the variations and hefty reliance on the build quality that timber constructions harbour, determining the outcome of acoustic results is difficult for it is often the ceiling that lets down a good system, especially when it is attached to joists underneath. A ceiling system with a degree of suspension if often required and recommended to put in place if the ceiling is of the above, our MuteClip® ceiling soundproofing solutions come in a wide range of options that can help assist – this is for conversions. For planned or proposals of new build timber structures we can help design acoustic partitions of your current makeup to help determine potential results of both airborne and impact. Timber is heavily influenced by many construction elements that can both negatively and positively affect their performance for the passage of sound.

For when impact noise or structural vibration is for a specific appliance, for example washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer – it can be installed as a standalone floor soundproofing platform to reduce noise transfer into the structure. For airborne noise, installing in one area of a single room will not reduce any noise issues as it will find the weakest point – even if rooms below are separated in a way that would split your single room in half, the sound would move along the flooring area by way of Flanking Transmission.
