MuteClip® (Patent Pending) Internal Single is our slim and effective option for projects that require a wall soundproofing solution that performs at a high standard and is space-conscious with only  a 56mm loss of space when fitting to an already existing stud frame or in addition to the new framework without a brick or block construction. It works by creating lesser points of contact with the stud frame using our MuteClip®, which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case acting as a shock absorber. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip® and the new soundproof wall which is composed of a single layer of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm suspend away from the framework. Ultimately what this results in is an improved reduction of airborne noise, with particular focus on the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing any immediate vibrations.

Making sure you are prepared

  • Conduct prior sound testing or home testing to draw attention to any potential flanking paths (where sound takes an alternative path), and this will be an essential part of making sure you have the best soundproofing in place and managing what is possible to achieve, our team can help guide you on this.
  • You will need to make sure you are fixing directly into the brick/blockwork and not fixing over existing plasterboard (this may require levelling before installation)
  • To lay Acoustic Mineral Wool between flooring and ceiling joists to help reduce flanking transmission

How to Install

Installation is based on a 600mm spacing, and we recommend staggering the MuteClip® at 1200mm in a diamond configuration with a MuteClip® at each end. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 600mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom

  • If the framework is not already installed, this will benefit from the fixture with Isolation Strips around the perimeter to maintain maximum separation.
  • MuteClip®™ fixed to the framework
  • 100mm overlap on MuteClip® Channel with four self-tapping screws into the shoulders of the  MuteClip® Channel, running parallel with the joists.
  • Rockwool RW3 between framework
  • The layer of Acoustic Plasterboard fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant)

Compliance with Part E Building Regulations and Scottish Building Regulations


  • We would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on this Acoustic System in regards to Part E Building Regulations; these are applicable across the UK, excluding Scotland (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland.

With our MuteClip® Internal Single we are looking to provide a solution that is 56mm in thickness that can be applied the internal partitions that are even existing or you are looking to split one room into two. You will want to have a specialist look at the suitability of any existing stud frames if there is the uncertainty of weights, this is where MuteClip® Single has less mass than our Double and Double Plus systems. The airborne reduction will be vastly improved with any existing standard plasterboard fitted and can be upgraded at a later date if you would like to improve the soundproofing performance. Expectations with our MuteClip® Internal Single system with Acoustic Plasterboard fitted on the other side and an acoustic grade sound insulation between the stud frame to achieve a 5-10dB improvement over existing systems which would be an average of 25-50% of noises reduced, mainly focusing on the middle lows to highs, please bear in mind this guidance will not take into account any Flanking Paths.

Due to this acoustic system having a single layer of Acoustic Plasterboard and with the increased acoustic values required between neighbouring properties, we would not suggest the use of MuteClip® Internal Stud for this use unless necessary, space restrictions for example in a residential conversion project, it may need to be installed on either side if the space restrictions allow when a Mute Clip™ Internal Double cannot be installed. Discuss with your acoustic consultant your options. New Builds we would point your attention to MuteClip® Internal Double so these can be factored in at an early stage to avoid complications.

Acoustic Clips, like our MuteClip®, offers an improved acoustic performance over resilient bars, a straight forward fixing that cannot be fitted incorrectly and in turn, will not lead to the failure of Part E Building Regulations or general soundproofing needs by errors made in the installation process.

This all depends on the thickness of the stud framing. Generally 50mm is the absolute minimum although a 75mm would offer a much sturdier construction. The MuteClip® and MuteClip® Channel will provide you with an additional 41mm of space, so with the use of a 50mm stud framing and MuteClip® system, 75mm would be your best option - and 100mm for the use of a 75mm stud framing. Remember, avoid compressing Acoustic Mineral Wool between two surfaces which is the layer of Acoustic Plasterboard attached to the MuteClip® System and the plasterboard on the other side of the framework.

It all depends on the age and thickness of the stud framing, a joiner would have a better judgement on the best way forward, some reinforcing may be required to existing timber and metal flamings for a secure fitting, this would be to create noggins which are generally recommended. If not, a new framework should be constructed with the use of Isolation Strips to limit contact with the adjacent surfaces.

Minimum of 50mm stud framework, 75mm recommended for a better-supported installation - especially if in the future you are looking to improve the soundproofing by adding additional layers.

This detail is essential to maintain the best acoustic performance possible with an acoustic system that features rigid materials. If the Acoustic Plasterboard is fitted tightly against adjacent walls, floors and ceilings - any flanking transmission found coming through these paths will move straight into any points of contact that the plasterboard is touching and continue to conduct noise. These small gaps are filled with an Acoustic Sealant to continue to reduce noise leakage in these areas. Acoustic Plasterboard is only butted up to one another on a single wall installation - this will also require a bead of Acoustic Sealant, the aim is to create a complete air right seal.

Yes, to achieve the best acoustic performance you will want to remove at least one side of the plasterboard attached to the existing stud framework, this void will require an acoustic grade of mineral wool fitted between to reduce to the cavity from resonating and amplifying noise issues.
