What is a soundproof panel?

A Soundproof Panel is a sound insulation board, designed to add mass and decouple from the existing structure. This is achieved by adding a layer of high-density material and low-density foam to an acoustic plasterboard. This makes for a slimline and easy-to-install soundproofing system.

Why do soundproof panels have different numbers?

Accepted Answer

The numbers that follow MuteBoard represent how many layers make up the board. In simple terms, the more layers the more effective the board is at soundproofing.

Are soundproof panels good?

Accepted Answer

Soundproof panels are highly effective sound insulators for their comparatively slim design. If the effectiveness of soundproofing takes precedence over all else however we advise using the MuteClip and channel system which offers the most effective soundproofing.

How to install soundproof panels.

Accepted Answer

Soundproof panels can be installed on masonry or timber walls. They require 9 fixing points per board. You must avoid the board touching the adjacent walls, floor or ceiling leaving a gap that can be filled with acoustic sealant for an airtight decoupled finish.

Can soundproof panels be installed to soundproof a brick or block wall?

MuteBoard® 4 is our best-performing single acoustic panel that can be installed directly to brick and block walls, or you can also fit them to a new existing or new stud framing of both metal and timber. Each board requires multiple fixings per board and is an excellent space-saving method for soundproofing against low to mid-level noises in the home or for soundproofing an office where airborne noise is an issue. You can improve this by installing on to a new stud frame fixed away from the existing partition and installing acoustic mineral wool in the newly created cavity. Can I install MuteBoard® 4 as a ceiling soundproofing solution?

Accepted Answer

MuteBoard® 4 cannot be used to soundproof a ceiling, and the blue cross-linked foam is not suitable for a ceiling installation where fire regulations are concerned. We have a range of high-performing ceiling soundproofing products to suit different requirements.

Do you recommend installing any additional soundproofing materials with MuteBoard® 4?

Accepted Answer

You can apply MuteBoard® 4 in a variety of different ways to help improve the acoustic performance, but it is always recommended to use acoustic mineral wool between any adjacent cavities to reduce ‘flanking transmission’ which can affect the overall performance. Sound will always find its way to an open cavity if a clear path permits it, going around the MuteBoard® 4 and appearing in one of these cavities.

Can I adhere MuteBoard® 4 to the wall without screws?

Accepted Answer

MuteBoard® 4 is a hand laminated product which uses a tack adhesive to bond materials together; it is not suitable for installation with an adhesive as the mass would pull apart the tack. We only recommend mechanical fixings with MuteBoard® 4.

Which way around is Acoustic Plasterboard installed?

The blue paper finish will want to be facing into the room; if using a tapered edge, it will be the tapered edge facing into the room.
