The world of soundproofing and general construction presents an uncertain journey for those arriving fresh to the subject, there maybe terminology or use of acoustic testing figures that could appear confusing, and even if you are at a professional level, it is good to brush up to make sure you are making the right choice. We want to help you come to the right decision, so whether this is through the use of our guides or talking to a member of our team - we are here to help!

How to Soundproof a Floor

A combination of the following will always result in a much improved acoustic performance.

  • Mass: the addition of more substantial materials to reduce sound energy, for example, added layers combined with soundproof Plasterboard.
  • Separation: breaking contact with the surface or surfaces through the use of acoustic isolation clips or stud framing.
  • Damping: the reduction of vibration through the use of flexible, damping materials such as Tecsound.

To create a soundproofing system that can reduce an extensive range of sounds and noises, you will need to combine all of the properties above. By separating the mass from the structure and suspending it away, you are breaking contact with the construction and creating an air gap, which is both essential in the better reduction of sound, especially if they are ones you can hear clear as day. Low-frequency noises and vibration are not just created in areas with amplified music or machinery, but can originate from televisions or the low-tone of a male voice and even closing a door - these noises often travel greater distances than you'd think, and will also on occasion, lead to Flanking Transmission.

Blue Cloth Tape offers no immediate soundproofing benefit, it is very thin, lightweight adhesive. But, it helps to keep together floor soundproofing materials, which will help to stop any movement during or after installation by keeping them as a larger piece.

We recognise the subjective nature of sound and how we react to each one, and that is why we offer so many variances in our systems. We understand that it is not always possible to incorporate significant losses of space with say, the introduction of a stud frame, so we provide different variances to suit what performance you need, your budget and thickness.

Blue Cloth Tape or Cold Tape has an increased temperature range in where use in colder environments does not affect the adhesive, there are often cases where installation of soundproofing materials in colder months lend to all the tape of the joins becoming loose because the cold weather has worn the adhesive.

Blue Cloth Tape can be used with all MuteMat® OSF, MuteMat® and MuteBarrier™ floor soundproofing products.
