A load-bearing, cement particle board for the improvement of airborne noise in flooring systems.
For creating a high performing acoustic floor, there often needs to be a combination of both flexible and dense materials, for example, ones that have a lot of weight. Without this weight, and with the use of foam like materials, you may see an improvement for impact, but very little for airborne. If the noise is intrusive to your everyday activities, or your work team, a replacement of ply and chipboard flooring with our Versafloor® 18mm will help to improve the mass of the floor, and in turn, decrease airborne noise.
Versafloor® 18mm is a tongue-and-groove, cement impregnated chipboard, and what this means for soundproofing is that the interlocking groove helps to keep an airtight seal, this is essential in maintaining excellent performance for acoustics. It has a high mass, which is important for creating a 'barrier' against airborne noise. Versafloor® is also load bearing on specific flooring centres, which means that you can install it as a standalone, we would need to make sure it is compatible with your structure first. To achieve the best possible solution for soundproofing, you will need to incorporate them into 'Systems', and it is here you will find Versafloor® 18mm in a range of options, these are found in the tab above. Each offers ways of increasing acoustic performance, for example, fitting it on top of acoustic cradles to create a fully floating floor, or by adding them to timber joist structures alongside sound insulation for a vast improvement for airborne and impact noise, or use in concrete buildings as a standalone for impact reduction.

Versafloor®, because of its concrete wood-chip mixture, helps to create a significant amount of mass, an important part of the soundproofing process. It is commonly installed in conjunction with removing the existing floor, treating the space (cavities) between the joists and refitting the floor with a buffer around the perimeter, this is our Perimeter Flanking Band. You want to prevent Flanking Transmission whenever possible, both in timber and concrete builds, and one example here that installation teams often overlook installing all the flooring layers tightly against the adjacent walls without a buffer. This vibration then has a clear path for transfer into the wall, moving up or down, leading to lesser results, or even the failure of an acoustic test.
With the vast ranges of noises expected in the home or workplace, these often contribute heavily to distractions and disruptions, so it is essential to not only combine all the properties above when choosing a soundproofing system but also to take care of the smaller details. Versafloor® 18mm acts either a replacement for chipboard or ply or as an over boarding for large spanning joists. Tongue-and-groove options help to keep the floor airtight, and this is very important for airborne noise, as it will travel through any remaining gaps, even those a few millimetres in width.

Soundproofing products act as a barrier to decrease sound leaving or entering a room or workspace. Sound absorbers absorb the sound within a room and assist to reduce room reverberation etc. Absorbers do not prevent the sound leaving the space but will reduce it. If you are wanting to soundproof a room you would have to buy soundproofing products. It may also be worthwhile to think about some absorbers inside the room to help reduce the sound before it hits the soundproofing.
A sound barrier is a sound blocker and usually includes insulation with a high mass, which then reduces the amount of sound that can pass through it. A standard domestic door is a good example of a noise barrier when it is closed as it reduces the sound of external noise. Sound waves flow like water and air so it is impracticable to use a sound barrier such as a fence or screen to stop noise but they are effective when used to reduce noise immediately on the other side of them. From distances farther away the noise reduction will be less efficient.
