MuteMat® Gym 70-B68 is our acoustically superior, high performing gym soundproof platform for attenuating excessive levels of impact transmission and structural borne vibration, and to achieve specific soundproofing targets set out for proposed gyms that need to adhere to high sound insulation values for impact noise, and for reducing structural borne vibration found in concrete constructions.

It is suited for both professional and commercial level gyms, for dedicated home gyms and even for the soundproofing of hotel fitness studios. The MuteMat® Gym is a modular tile install fitted on top of the MuteMat® Gym SFP, that is incredibly easy to install, robust and durable - even with subjected to consistent weight drops, it also serves as a final floor finish with anti-slip qualities.

  • Suitable for soundproofing large fitness centres and specific gym areas that harbour incredible levels of weight, helping to protect local residences and businesses from excessive noise issues.
  • System thickness from the existing floor 138mm
  • To achieve incredible levels of sound insulation against impact noise to reach high acoustic targets, carrying out a noise impact assessment will be crucial in the introduction or proposal of a new gym.
  • Use of a three-layer floor soundproof platform for maximum effect.
  • Use in areas of Crossfit, weighted stacks and maximum protection against treadmill use, rowing machines and dumbells to reduce structural-borne vibration.

The system comprises of MuteMat® Gym 70 tiles laid over MuteMat® Gym B34, with 2* layers of MuteMat® USP 625-17 on the bottom.

The abundance of low-end structural vibration from the impact of large weight drops is one of the most significant issues gymnasiums, and fitness centres face. If an unprotected floor receives a weight-bar from even the most conservative of heights, this will without fail cause incredible levels of structural vibration, with sound flanking up and down adjacent walls, across multiple flooring levels and even into ceiling areas above weight drops, covering great distances - especially in concrete structures. MuteMat® Gym systems provide unrivalled acoustic performance due to its multi-composite layers of various densities, thicknesses and material types - going to impressive lengths to reduce a wide range of impact noise issues that cause significant concern for gyms, areas that include cross-fit activities, heavy free-weight areas and stack.

MuteMat® Gym B34 is our highly recycled base layer for our gym flooring systems. When used in a system as a base layer it offers significant improvement and protection against impact sounds transfering through the floor. Primarily used in free-weight areas and spaces where high levels of impact are expected. This product is suitable for professional and commercial gyms.

MuteMat® USP 625-17 is a pimpled, compressible rubber crumb acoustic material that deviates from 10mm to 17mm to offer maximum compressibility to absorb sound energy from impact noise issues. This creates a floating floor structure that provides providing lesser points of contact between the substrate and the new MuteMat® Gym layers. What you get is a robust acoustic platform that when weights are dropped, their impact is muted.

Acoustic Gym Design and the Importance of Soundproofing

The result of the world's ever-increasing urban population demands convenience to a wide range of entertainment, leisure, and health and fitness services, and these are essential to city life. Travelling vast distances takes time and effort of a potential customer, and will most choose the most convenient. Because of this, it now more often than not that multi-purpose complexes are harbouring all of the above services in the same building, alongside each other and with residences sitting adjacent. Gymnasiums and Fitness centres placed in these vulnerable locations are considered to be highly sensitive and will need to meet stringent requirements that consider the protection of adjacent residences and businesses.

This is why it is detrimental to select the correct soundproofing and the sensible maintenance of noise issues for the daily activities of the gym, especially if it is to be open beyond usual business hours. If the premises disrupts the daily lives of residences or nearby businesses by neglecting acoustic targets, they withhold the acceptable right to put in formal complaints. If you do not meet acoustic goals or the soundproofing in place is not adequate, this could result in a potential strip back of activities you offer your members or complete closure of your premises.

In the process of design, it is essential to assure that the right sound insulation materials are put in place, installed and maintained. These will want to be before any gym equipment, decoration or services are installed, the maintenance of sound works on a community level, something acoustic design targets will brief you on, for example keeping music at a certain level. We have put together a guide to what acoustic design targets may be required to consider, although these will require discussion with local building control or council authorities as values can differ.

Gym Noise Impact Assessment

Proposals for new gyms and fitness centres should not neglect an initial Gym Noise Impact Assessment, especially when they adjacent to other businesses and residences. Such an assessment will look at all the contributing factors that would decide the best placement of certain rooms internally, what level of soundproofing would be required to protect neighbours and what areas would be possible to implement or in some cases, not possible.

This becomes incredibly important when you are creating a fitness centre and spa in one development, the assessment will look at potential acoustic systems that need to be put in place to protect them from excessive noise issues, on all trajectories of sound - floors, walls and ceilings.

We provide these acoustic assessments at a competitive rate, as well as developing acoustic designs to meet agreed gym soundproofing requirements

General Impact Testing

Impact Noise Testing in an already existing gym may be required with the installation of adjacent or close proximity wellness and spa areas. There will always be uncertainty of what level of acoustic isolation and soundproofing would be required for these rooms for them be at their quietest for the best possible experience. This would involve a drop test on a variety of MuteMat® Gym products as solo options and like this acoustic system, combining with or MuteMat® Gym SFP range to help with achieving your acoustic targets.
