A highly durable, compression moulded and easy to install gym soundproofing platform for use against extreme impact noise or vibration.

MuteMat® Gym 70 is our superbly engineered, very high performing, but yet still easy to install gym soundproofing platform designed for offering maximum protection against both excessive impact noise from weight-drops and structural-borne vibration across professional and commercial gyms, dedicated workout areas at home, and even workplace gym features. Each MuteMat® Gym is engineered with Compression Moulded technology to create a final product that is precise, consistent and effective. Each module has a ring-like pedestal structure moulded to the underside during the compression process, which provides both optimal acoustic decoupling with the structural flooring and suspension to drastically reduce very high levels of impact noise. For each soundproofing material, you will often find that to achieve specific sound insulation values you will need to combine them with additional products to create a complete soundproofing system that is best suited, you can find all systems in which MuteMat® Gym 70 is incorporated into by selecting the 'Systems' tab above.

The design of MuteMat® Gym 70 is for the attenuation of impact noises in free-weight areas, where significant weights could cause massive disruption to both neighbouring residents and clients, dumbbell areas containing lighter free-weights, and machine operated apparatus such as treadmills and spin cycles. All these examples generate high levels of middle to low-frequency vibration during operation. Structural vibration is a significant concern for the activities featured above, and MuteGym™ 70 is the perfect place to start.

Importance of Gym Acoustics

The selection of the correct soundproofing materials for gyms is hugely important - especially those located in multipurpose structures or those that are adjacent to residences. The excessive dropping of heavy workout equipment will create noise issues that need to be tackled efficiently and not to be neglected, as failure to comply with any specified acoustic regulations, or requirements that are set by local building control or local councils could lead to the discontinuation of use for your chosen premises. These acoustic targets are put in place to avoid any potential neighbour complaints from both residential and commercial properties, and this reinforces the importance of conducting a comprehensive Gym Noise Impact Assessment right at the start - in all proposed gyms, as any complaints reaching an authoritative level would have a negative effect on what you can provide to your customers. With the vast range of activities that often take place in Gyms each will present their acoustic challenges that range from heavy-weightlifting and Crossfit areas to yoga, pilates or Zumba classes, for example. With noise sensitive areas close to each other, you will want to avoid this at an early stage to stop it affecting the overall experience your customers receive. Your brand and the feedback you receive is vital for continued success, and iKoustic want to help you maintain this!

Our selection of MuteMat® Gym modular tiles range in performance and thickness and are each designed for specific areas featured in gyms across a range of different activities. They can also be used to achieve potentially higher targets that specify a minimum noise level above general gym acoustic design targets. You can find these variations below or contact our team to begin putting together a full solution alongside our Noise Impact Assessments for your Gym today - 01937 588 226

A Guide to Soundproofing a Floor

Acoustics in Gym Design

"To minimise the risk of complaints regarding gym noise, we recommend that new mixed-use developments are designed so that noise from the gym is generally inaudible in adjoining dwellings. This is a much higher level of sound insulation than the minimum requirements in Part E of the Building Regulations. Inaudibility is particularly difficult to quantify as it is dependent on the background noise levels and the Gym may not yet have been built. In these cases iKoustic use nominal design targets such as ...

Design targets for maximum gym noise levels in habitable rooms of adjoining residential properties:

Daytime (0700-2300hrs) - 20 dB LAmax

Night-time (2300-0700hrs) - 10 dB LAmax"

Understanding the structure and what it is constructed of is important in the proposal of a new gym - how may affect any neighbouring properties is incredibly important, and with this we would always recommend to conduct a comprehensive Noise Impact Assessment during the planning stage, not only for selecting the correct acoustic materials and reducing perhaps problematic complaints with neighbours, but also the successful planning of internal rooms too. The dropping of free-weights, weight-stacks that are machine operated and even the use of light cardio machinery such as treadmills or spin areas can cause problems with impact noise and vibration, for where maximum protection is required.

MuteMat® Gym 70 is a perfect, dedicated soundproofing gym product for reducing an array of impact noise issues structural borne vibration, such as those above. It can be installed in personal gyms at home all the way up to professional level specialist and commercial gyms that can often be found in multi purpose complexes where residences, restaurants and even shops all share the same structure, and all of which are affected by structural borne vibration.

When a high level impact noise insulation value is required, MuteMat® Gym 70 is best to use. It’s coverage includes areas involving free-weights, machine weights and cross-fit areas - all where impact noise levels are found in excessive amounts. MuteMat® Gym comprises of a highly effective ring structure on the bottom that helps limit the amount of contact with the sub floor and provides not only something stable and robust, but also a final floor finish without requiring any additional finishes.

With the affordability of home gym equipment, these are appearing even in the most humblest of homes - even a treadmill or cycling machine. MuteMat® Gym 51 can be used at home to help soundproof against impact and vibration, often finding incredible results in concrete structures, but will often be lessened in timber. If it is used in a timber construction, and additional compressible mat may be best used in conjunction to act as a platform area. With heavy-free weights, something more substantial may need to be put in place to reduce excessive noise disturbing your neighbours.

Gym equipment for the home has become highly affordable for a vast majority, whether it’s a set of dumbbells, a cycling machine or a expansive selection of equipment - if you have neighbours, or rooms located adjacent to bedrooms in your own home, it is safe to say you will need a form of soundproofing to reduce potential complaints. MuteMat® Gym 70 can be used at home to help soundproof against impact and vibration, often with incredible results in concrete structures. If it is used in a timber construction an additional compressible mat may be best used in conjunction to act as a platform area. With heavy-free weights, something more substantial may need to be put in place to reduce excessive noise disturbing your neighbours.

MuteMat® Gym 70 is our most robust and dedicated tile of the MuteMat® Gym modular series, especially made for free weight areas. With the use of free-weights, remember, it is important to carry out Noise Impact Assessments in developments with adjoining properties. Depending on the level of soundproofing you need to achieve, the MuteMat® Gym 70 can be combined with out MuteMat® Gym SFP 17 to gain maximum soundproofing insulation against structural borne vibration.

The design of all our MuteMat® Gym products is a simple Kros Lok pattern set up to be installed in modular form. These will often require bonding to the substrate in which you can find all information out on adhesives and which is best to use in a range of applications on our Related PDFs tab.

With MuteMat® Gym 70 specified on the floor, you are helping to vastly improve the reduction of impact transmission and the effects it can have on both timber and concrete structures, but there are of course other areas that will need further soundproofing to make certain your Gym is doing all it can to mitigate noise issues. A Noise Impact Assessment will take all of these areas and issues in to account, and point us in the right direction of what to specify. In most cases a suspended acoustic ceiling is required in conjunction with any areas involving free-weights to reduce any major vibration causing potential damaging to fixtures and fittings, as well further mitigation of the impact noise, walls and ceilings adjacent and above rooms also require soundproofing, as leaving these areas untreated could lead to flanking transmission or simply transferring directly to properties that require the same level of treatment that are not located in your property.

You will want to consider factoring in our MuteClip® Stud Double Plus systems in all wall and ceiling areas.

In addition to this, gyms are often constructed with hard and reflective surfaces for these are easier to clean. But, when personal training or important instructions are conveyed with clients the message if often lost in these large, open and reverberant spaces, lowering the quality and impact of the classes and putting significant strain on the speaker’s vocals, this can lead to negative health effects, as well as causing stress to the clients listening out for instructions. With this in mind, we would often look to improve the internal acoustics of each room with our sound absorption materials, any from our NoteRange - to assist with reducing reverberation in the different spaces.
