MuteClip® (Patent GB2580959) LP Double is a popular option for projects that require a ceiling soundproofing solution that is both high performing and reduces head height loss without compromise of acoustic performance. It creates lesser points of contact with the joist ceiling using our MuteClip® LP which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber, and this is bolted to a bracket that allows both MuteClip® and Channel to nest into the joists. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip® LP and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of two layers of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm and Tecsound suspend away from the ceiling joists. What this ultimately results in is a vastly improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing impact noise and other forms of light vibration.

Making sure you are prepared

  • Conduct prior sound testing or home testing to draw attention to any potential flanking paths (where sound takes an alternative route), and this will be an essential part of making sure you have the best soundproofing in place and managing what is possible to achieve, our team can help guide you on this.
  • You will need to make sure you are fixing MuteClip® XP direct into the joist without any obstruction
  • To lay Acoustic Mineral Wool between any adjacent stud framing or cavity walls to help reduce flanking transmission

How to Install

Installation is based on a 400mm - 800mm diamond spacing. MuteClip® Channels would also installed with a 400mm spacing with one located 100mm from top and bottom. Please see installation guides for more information.

  • MuteClip® LP fixed to the side of the joists.
  • 200mm overlap on MuteClip® Channel with four self-tapping screws into the shoulders of the MuteClip® Channel, running parallel with the joists.
  • Rockwool RW3 or Knauf RS60 between joists.
  • The first layer of Acoustic Plasterboard fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant).
  • A layer of Tecsound SY70 adhered with self-adhesive backing to Acoustic Plasterboard.
  • The second layer of Acoustic Plasterboard fixed on to MuteClip® Channel with self-tapping screws (leaving a 2-5mm gap from any adjacent surfaces and using acoustic sealant).

Compliance with Part E Building Regulations and Scottish Building Regulations

  • When installed under the correct guidance this system is compliant with the required acoustic values for airborne and impact transmission featured in Part E Building Regulations; these are applicable across the UK, excluding Scotland (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland. We would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on an Acoustic System.
  • It is also compliant with the required acoustic values for airborne and impact transmission featured in the Building Standards Technical Handbook 2017 for Scotland, and we would advise conducting a Sound Test to survey any planned conversions in existing properties before concluding on an Acoustic System. Scottish Building Regulations contain higher targets than that of Part E, and our Legal Requirements section has the required acoustic values.

With the MuteClip® LP, Low Profile attached to the side of the joist instead of the bottom, the total loss of head height is minimised as the clip and channel can now sit further up the joist, only requiring adjustment to meet the lowest point of the ceiling. You will want to make sure the initial plasterboard has a small isolation gap between it and the joist, contact will pass sound through and may cause vibration. Overall acoustic performance is not affected by the design and will remain the same as our standard MuteClip® Double. Flanking Transmission should always be addressed in each adjacent wall for if sound is found in those areas, this will affect overall performance, but as a general guide for the reduction of noise we expect to yield an 10-15db decrease for airborne and 10-20dB for impact transmission, so a 50-67% or a 50-75% reduction respectively.

We expect to see vast improvements to any of those noises that are created in typical households; day-to-day noise issues can often affect our daily lives even when a neighbour is only perhaps carrying out their regular routine. We have chosen the word block here to highlight that it is often used in acoustic, and is often also very difficult to achieve. The primary aim is to reduce its transmission to a background noise level. Those with hearing sensitivities of both a medical and psychological level will react to sound in far more acute ways, but even people without such ailments or disorders have their sensitivity to sound.

With Flanking Transmission addressed on adjacent walls, the acoustic values that MuteClip® LP Double achieves are in excess of Part E Building Regulation requirements for both conversions and new builds in the majority of cases. It is still wise to use an acoustic underlay above to reduce impact noise and to inquire about an acoustic partition design, something we can put together, to look at estimated results and outcomes with your proposed flooring and ceiling structure.

The MuteClip® LP offers very little error to be made during fixing, and it does take a little more focus on making sure the ceiling is straight in that the plasterboard is not in contact with the joist at any time, and that there is a gap big enough to deal with vibration and suspension. Resilient Channels offer no alternative for reducing head height, so if this is the concern, we would highly recommend the MuteClip® LP for best acoustic performance with minimal head height loss.

With direct contact of hard surfaces, such as abutting Acoustic Plasterboard to the adjacent walls - this creates an easy path for vibration to travel, inevitably short-circuiting both MuteClip® and Channel. With tight abutting this will lead to restriction of ceiling suspension, negatively impacting the acoustic performance of the system. Make sure you always to leave an isolation gap between these surfaces and run a bead of acoustic sealant down them through each layer to prevent air flow. Tecsound, on the other hand, can be in contact due to its ability to reduce vibrations and seal gaps.

The overall thickness of your joists will determine the resulting depth of Acoustic Mineral Wool you should look to install. Remember, MuteClip® LP will sit further into the joist and will not offer the expansion gap that is offered with the standard MuteClip® and Channel, With a typical joist depth found in most residences of 2x8 inches or 50.8 x 203.2, perhaps only 150mm total thickness of Acoustic Mineral Wool would be appropriate. We recommend leaving an air gap of at least 10mm from the MuteClip® Channel and the floor above, tightly compacting in additional sound insulation will harm acoustic performance.

Cornice, coving and all other decorative features often found in or near ceiling areas will require removal up until the final estimated depth of the new MuteClip® LP Double. The same goes for electronics - light fixtures, alarms or motion sensors; for example, these require the wiring extended to accommodate the new depths and locations, this work would be carried out by a registered electrician. Plasterboard or a Lath and Plaster ceiling would also need to be removed to allow the fitting of the MuteClip® LP.
