Wall Soundproofing London

The most common soundproofing job we undertake in London is treating walls between adjoining properties. These are referred to as ‘party walls’

The most effective and slimmest way to soundproof these walls is to install a clip and channel system. This means you essentially build a new wall on top of an isolated frame that connects to your existing wall with an array of mini shock absorbers (it’s less complicated than it sounds!)

Ceiling Soundproofing London

Noise from above can feel like the most intrusive type of noise. Having neighbour’s voices, music and footsteps coming from above is very frustrating.

We’ve developed highly effective systems that unlike other systems we are able to hugely reduce the loss of ceiling height that usually comes with soundproofing. Though we may associate London townhouses with high ceilings, not all of us have the space to lose!

Office Soundproofing London

Sound absorption is essential for offices. If your office feels like the sound is bouncing off the walls like a cathedral, you have an absorption problem. We treat this with aesthetic acoustic panels, and baffles to bring the noise down.

Perhaps you need a place where confidential conversations need to take place. Off-the-shelf office wall panels often lead to this problem. This is where iKoustic can help you construct highly effective soundproof rooms to keep your private conversations private!

If you require installation we can connect you with London soundproofing installers who specialize in acoustics.

Your London wall soundproofing questions

What sort of sound reduction can I expect?

Below is a digital representation of our best wall soundproofing partition based on our lab tests at Salford University. We’ve provided the materials and support to install this system all across London. We work with London soundproofing experts to deliver quality installed.

How much does wall soundproofing cost?

The cost of wall soundproofing varies depending on factors such as the size of the wall, the chosen soundproofing method, and whether you hire professionals or do it yourself. The cost may include materials, labour, and any necessary modifications. It is recommended to obtain a quote from our network of London soundproofing specialists for accurate pricing information.

The estimated materials price for a high end direct to wall system as of 2023 would be around £90 per square meter with installation around £80 – £120 on top of that meaning a 10m2 bedroom wall in London would cost around £2000 to soundproof. Cheaper options are available but it’s best to discuss your noise issue with an installer first before making any decisions.

Can I soundproof an existing wall, or does it need to be done during construction?

Yes, most of our London soundproofing jobs are working on an existing wall. Our retrofit solutions make soundproofing as simple as possible. Since 2003 new builds have had to adhere to acoustic guidelines which often rely on building very thick walls. Our systems are designed to minimise how much room space you have to sacrifice whilst maximising the soundproofing. The specific approach will depend on the structure of the wall and the soundproofing method chosen.

Can I do wall soundproofing myself, or do I need to hire professionals?

Generally, hiring professionals ensures proper installation and may lead to more effective soundproofing outcomes. Don’t let this put you off though, we have had thousands of competent DIY customers install our systems to great effect. We offer installation guides and videos, you can even call our technical team for advice.

Will soundproofing a wall completely eliminate noise?

While soundproofing can significantly reduce noise transmission, it is unlikely to completely eliminate all noise. Sound can still enter through other pathways such as windows, doors, and ceilings. However, with proper soundproofing techniques and materials, you can achieve a substantial reduction in noise levels.

Can soundproofing walls increase the value of my property?

Soundproofing walls can potentially increase the value of your property, as it enhances the overall comfort and livability of the space. In London soundproofing is an attractive feature for potential buyers or tenants, especially in areas with high ambient noise levels. However, the impact on property value may vary depending on other factors as well.

How thick will my wall soundproofing be?

The slimmest system we offer is 25mm and the thickest is 175mm. Soundproofing is often a trade-off between the quality of the sound reduction and the loss of space. We work to find a system that cuts out the noise you’re dealing with whilst costing you minimum space. Our specialist products when compared with traditional materials are designed to be more effective at soundproofing whilst needing less space.

How effective is floor soundproofing in reducing noise?

The effectiveness of floor soundproofing depends on factors such as the type of noise, the construction of the floor, and the soundproofing materials and techniques used. When applied correctly, floor soundproofing can significantly reduce airborne and impact noise, creating a quieter and more peaceful environment. We offer simple underlays that can reduce impact and airborne sound and systems that are highly effective drastically reduce sound transmission.

Can I soundproof under carpets?

Yes, we have various underlays that can suit almost all floor finishes from. Carpet, Hardwood, LVT, Linoleum and even tile, we can find a solution for you.

Can I soundproof an existing floor, or does it need to be done during construction?

Yes, you can. If you want the highest possible level of floor soundproofing you will need to lift your floorboards, however, if you only require light soundproofing you can just use an underlay under your floor finish.

Can I do floor soundproofing myself, or do I need to hire professionals?

DIY floor soundproofing is possible for some methods, such as installing resilient underlayment or using soundproofing mats. However, more complex techniques like decoupling the floor structure may require London soundproofing professionals. The decision to hire professionals depends on the complexity of the project and your own skills and experience.

How much does floor soundproofing cost in London?

This can vary from £25-£80 per meter squared for materials. It really depends on how much sound you are trying to reduce. Stopping impact noise travelling down is generally cheaper than trying to reduce airborne sound, though small amounts of airborne can usually be treated quite easily. London soundproofing installations can cost slightly more than other areas of the Uk so be sure to factor that into your budgeting.

Will floor soundproofing completely eliminate noise?

While floor soundproofing can significantly reduce noise transmission, it may not completely eliminate all noise. Other factors such as sound travelling through walls, windows, or ceilings can still contribute to overall noise levels. However, effective floor soundproofing can greatly improve the acoustic performance of a space.

Your London ceiling soundproofing questions

How does sound travel through ceilings?

Millions of Londoners are living with upstair neighbours. With modern building regulations most of the time there won’t be issues with sound. But older builds especially can cause impact and airborne sound to ‘Leak’ through to your home. Sound can travel through ceilings via airborne transmission (sound waves travelling through the air) and impact transmission (vibrations transferred through the structure). For most ceiling soundproofing projects you will need to remove the existing ceiling and create a new one build with acoustic materials.

It’s worth mentioning that if you are a landlord or have a good relationship with your upstairs neighbour treating impact noise will be cheaper and more effective by treatign the floor above rather than the ceiling below so you may be able to come to an agreement to soundproof the floor above instead.

Do I have to take my existing ceiling down?

Not necessarily, for projects that require very light soundproofing, you could consider using a soundproof panel like MuteBoard 2.

MuteBoard 2 Timber ceiling soundproofing

How much does ceiling soundproofing cost in London?

For the most part, the materials are the same as wall soundproofing unless you require specialist clips so the material cost will be around £90 per square meter. Due to the more challenging installation, it could cost more than £130 per square meter for your installer to complete your job. London soundproofing installers may charge slightly higher prices than the rest of the UK so make sure you get quotes before you set your projects budget.

Can I do ceiling soundproofing myself, or do I need to hire professionals?

As a rule, we would generally advise getting a professional team in to undertake any ceiling soundproofing. The materials are heavy and the skills and equipment required are highly specialised. If you need to find London soundproofing installers you can use our contact form and we will connect you with installers familiar with iKoustic techniques.

Summary

Soundproofing can feel a bit scary at first but if you decide to work with iKoustic you can be confident our team have your back and will help solve your noise issue.
