Treading on eggshells? if you or your upstairs neighbour had hardwood floors the impact sound can transfer quite easily so how do you soundproof a wooden floor?
Option 1 – Acoustic Underlay
This is the cheapest and fastest way to soundproof a wood floor. The best soundproof underlays feature closed-cell foam to absorb impact vibrations and mass-loaded vinyl to reduce airborne transmission. Installing an acoustic underlay can make a good difference and does not require lifting your floorboards.
Option 2 – Install a wooden floor soundproofing system
Generally, these systems involve lifting your floorboards to install acoustic mineral wool and lay rubber isolation strips on the floor joists. You can then reboard your floor with acoustic cement fibreboard before laying an acoustic underlay and finally your final floor finish. These types of systems create a huge reduction in airborne and impact sound transmission.
Based on the level of performance you need the material cost for soundproofing a wooden floor can range between £25-£120 per meter squared.
If you have low-level impact noise and airborne noise a low-cost acoustic underlay may deliver the results you need. If you have a high-level noise issue you may need a more advanced system.
